Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
The Book of Common Prayer, page 72, quoting The Book of Acts 20:35.
As the new church year begins Sunday November 30 with the First Sunday of Advent, we are asked to pray and look into our hearts to prepare for the birth of Christ. One of those considerations is how we are going to support the work of the Church and our parish in particular.
The primary reason to financially support the parish is that we have a duty to do so. All that we have, even our very existence, we have because of the grace and goodness of God because none of us caused ourselves to be born. The industry and intelligence and will to achieve by which we have made our way in the world were not of our own making, they were gifts of God. If we have prospered by using them prudently and well that is to our credit, but we should recognize that they are tools put in our hands by Him who created us. “Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” - Psalm 100, verse 3
An old rabbinical story tells of a Gentile considering conversion to Judaism who asked a rabbi, “If I become a Jew will that mean I have to give the Lord a tenth of all I have or ever will have?” “No,” was the answer, “It will mean you get to keep nine tenths of all that you have or ever will have.”
Jesus is, frankly, more demanding than that. He wants all that you have or ever will have to be used in His service, because He wants all that you are or ever will be to be a part of His body, the Church. Remember the story of the poor widow in Luke 21:1-4: “And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.”
Now when I say that God wants all that you have or ever will have to be used in His service, I don't mean that you should sign over everything that you have to the parish. I mean that you should look upon your financial affairs as one aspect of your Christian life and conduct them accordingly.
And what of giving to the parish? I believe that the single verse which best answers that question is Second Corinthians 9:7, where Saint Paul advises “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”
Why be cheerful about it? Because we should see financial support for the parish not only as a duty but also as an opportunity to grow spiritually. In surrendering to God's Church a portion of our own wealth is to further the work of His Kingdom. It is an effective sign that we are obedient to His will in full confidence that His will for us is far “... above all that we ask or think.” - Ephesians 3:20. That confidence is surely a cause for cheerfulness and even joy.
