On August 26 Bishop McClean passed on to greater life. He had a long history with our parish and was a great friend to many of our parishioners. This week’s e-letter is offering remembrances of the Bishop by two of those long-time friends: The Venerable Thomas McHenry (Rector of St. Stephen’s in Clifton Forge and formerly a lay member and leader of St. Andrew & St. Margaret of Scotland) and your e-letter editor Ron Pearson.
My memories of Bishop William McClean reach back almost 40 years, from the first DMAS Synod I attended, as a delegate from St. Margaret of Scotland. At the banquet, Gail and I were seated at the table next to (then) Fr. McClean and Lorraine. Within a very few minutes, we were chatting with him as though we had been friends for a long time – that was his way of relating to people. When I was ordained a deacon in 1999, his comment to me was, “You do know that the collar you’re wearing means that you now belong to someone else besides yourself?”
Four years later, when Archdeacon McClean was consecrated as the Fifth Bishop Ordinary of DMAS, he asked me to serve as his Archdeacon - and for the next nine years until his retirement as Bishop we worked closely together: teaching at the Harry B. Scott School, and watching men enter the ministry of the ACC -- including our current Bishop, Jeffrey Johnson, and the current Archdeacon, Michael Weaver. Through all that time, and up until his passing, I valued the time spent with Bishop McClean; especially his good humor even during difficult events, and his genuine love of the clergy and laity of this Diocese. May his Rest be in Peace, and his dwelling place be in the Paradise of God, whom he served long and well.

Then Deacon William McClean and I first met at St. Andrew of Scotland in 1983. He was the Deacon at the parish and my family were first visitors and then members. Deacon McClean had the twinkle in his eyes, the smile on his lips, the faith in his heart that shined so bright that others wanted to find the same joy that he had.
From that beginning our friendship flourished over the years while he was Rector of St. George’s in Oxon Hill, starting St. Anne’s as a mission in his home and quickly growing it into a full parish, being consecrated as the Bishop of the Diocese of the Mid-Atlantic States, retiring as DMAS Bishop to return full-time to St. Anne’s to oversee the building of the parish hall and the further growth of St. Anne’s. Over the years he was also a visitor and guest preacher at a half dozen or more of our St. Andrew’s Day Kirkin o’ the Tartans at St. Andrew & St. Margaret of Scotland.
We had phone calls and regular long lunches at a favorite restaurant of his off Route 5 in Maryland. Bishop McClean, the Venerable Tom McHenry and I were also known for finding brewpubs to share a beer or two and have a good meal at ACC Provincial Synods and other meetings from California to Athens, Georgia and many places in between.
Among the many great blessings that I received from my friendship with him, one of the greatest was his eulogy/sermon at my wife Trish’s funeral in January of 2013 at St. Andrew & St. Margaret of Scotland. (His own beloved wife Lorraine would pass in December of the same year.) The service was conducted by The Venerable Tom McHenry and Bishop McClean gave the sermon. He eulogized my wife and offered Christ as Savior to all those attending. And he did it with such humor, grace and humility that only he could do. As one of the attendees told me after that service, "That's the sermon I want at my funeral."
Thank you, Bishop McClean. It was a great honor and blessing to know you and be your friend.

Pork Barrel BBQ in Del Ray will provide pulled pork, coleslaw, mac and cheese, baked beans and potato salad. The Parish will provide hamburgers and hot dogs. A sign-up sheet for appetizers/side dishes and desserts is posted on the bulletin board in the undercroft.

Food Bank
The food bank continues to need our assistance to feed the hungry. .
Please help this month with a food donation if you are able. Those we help feed are very thankful for the food we provide to them each month. Please also buy low sugar cereals (and not the kid's types that have lots of sugar). Also lower sodium products are better and more healthy.
Current needs include the following:
